Once Game Dev Tycoon added an update that gave the topics and genres pictures, the complaints started coming. For some, it was too clunky and took up far too much space on the screen. The Compact Topics & Genres mod by Boom helps to remedy this problem. This mod reduces the size of the topics back to what they once were while keeping the fancy new icons that make the game look more polished and pretty. Compatible with other topic mods, Compact Topics is a great way to give yourself more user-friendly visuals while you play.

The player starts out in a garage in the early 1980s during the golden age of arcade video games with no employees, limited money, and limited choices for the first game. As new games are created, new options are unlocked. When the first game engine is built, the player's game development skills improve. New consoles will also be released, and the player will be able to buy licenses for certain consoles, such as the GS, PlaySystem, mBox, Vena Oasis, TES, and grPad which parody real life consoles and devices with different names due to trademark regulations. As the player progresses through the game further they have the opportunity to move to new offices and hire staff. After that further expansion is available, with players given the opportunity to open an R&D lab when reaching certain requirements that host major projects, allowing the player to unlock things they wouldn't be able to otherwise, such as MMOs and online game shops similar to Steam, Ubisoft Connect, App Store etc. The player may also open up a Hardware Lab to create consoles and devices.
The game's developers implemented an anti-piracy measure for Game Dev Tycoon. Patrick Klug, founder of Greenheart Games, knowing that the game was likely to be torrented extensively, purposely released a cracked version of the game and uploaded it himself to torrent sites. Gameplay in this version is identical except for one variation, as players progress through the game they receive the following message:
Boss, it seems that while many players play our new game, they steal it by downloading a cracked version rather than buying it legally. If players don't buy the games they like, we will sooner or later go bankrupt.
Eventually players of the cracked version will gradually lose money until they do go bankrupt, as a result of pirates. Some players complained on message forums about this piracy feature, unaware that it only appeared because they themselves pirated the game.
Game Dev Tycoon received varied reviews upon release. Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, gave the game a score of 68 based on 21 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".
In all I think people will love running their own game development studio, but in the end, this feels like a very hollow game. It has nice sounds and bubbles that move around making you feel good to see them flow up to the top. Its a nice touch for what is otherwise a static game with no movement, just menus.

It seems only yesterday that Game Dev Tycoon successfully cleared Steam Greenlight. In fact it was May. Now Greenheart Games has announced that the game developer simulator will launch on Steam on August 29.

Game Dev Tycoon made headlines earlier in the year when it was discovered to feature game-breaking measures if the game had been pirated. In-game releases would be completely destroyed by piracy. This led to hundreds of players complaining online that piracy within the game had ruined their playing experience.
There's this wonderful management simulation game that the developers at Greenheart Games have come up with. As in its title, Game Dev Tycoon, it's what you would expect; a tycoon game. It's been available for a while on their site for the small price of $7.99. Don't worry to those of you who purchased it earlier like I did, they will distribute Steam keys to existing customers when it's released later this month on August 29th.
As many know, I'm really into management games, and this game is fantastic. Not only do you start out in the 80s developing games out of a garage, you get to build your own gaming company. Being a Business major, this business simulation game hits my major right on the spot. Not to mention, you design games - in a video game! What could be better?
If you think you're the most bad-ass gamer, then I suggest you take a look into this game. Not only is it intriguing, but it's challenging. You get to develop games with different genres, features, platforms, and investments. You'd think you would be savvy at this, being an avid gamer, but you would be mistaken.
To those who have the game, comment and give me your story about your experience, and for those who haven't played it check it out on Steam August 29th. Plus, it's on sale for 20% off until September 5th, making it only $7.99 compared to the original price of $9.99.
